This Week’s Poll
What is your biggest concern when voting on tax or bond measures?
Why Tax and Bond Measures Deserve Scrutiny
Ballot measures often promise improvements to schools, roads, public safety, healthcare, housing, or other government services. Voters must decide whether the proposed benefits justify the added taxes or long-term debt.
Bond measures allow government agencies to borrow money immediately, while taxpayers repay the principal and interest over many years. Tax measures may be temporary or permanent, and the wording printed on the ballot may not fully explain the measure’s long-term financial impact.
Questions to Ask Before Voting
- How have existing tax revenues been spent?
- Is the proposed tax temporary or permanent?
- What is the estimated total bond repayment, including interest?
- Who will oversee the money?
- How will the government measure whether the proposal succeeds?
